Music Ministry

Mission Statement

The purpose of sacred music, and thus the purpose of the music ministry at the Cathedral of St. Mary, is “the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful” (Sacrosanctum Concilium). This dual purpose gives direction to our liturgical song. We praise God and we strive to move the faithful “to devotion and [to be] better disposed for the reception of the fruits of grace belonging to the celebration of the most holy mysteries” (Tra le sollecitudini). At Mass we participate through singing in dialogue with the celebrant in the orations, our choirs sing the parts which pertain to them, and the faithful are encouraged and supported in the singing of their parts (Musicam Sacram). All are invited to audition for the various choirs available at the Cathedral and to contribute to the beauty of the sacred liturgy.

The English Choir

The English choir sings the 10am Mass on Sunday mornings and the solemnities throughout the year. It is a mixed choir comprised of men, women and children from the Cathedral parish. This choir frequently joins with visiting choirs to sing at special feasts and Masses in the Extraordinary Form. The English choir was the principal choir that sang for the Masses for the Society for Catholic Liturgy Conference held at the Cathedral in 2017. But its accomplishments date as far back as singing for the visit to Miami by Pope St. John Paul II in 1987. The choir rehearses every Thursday from 7-9pm.

If you would like to join the English choir, please contact the Music Director to schedule an interview.
